The bare rock sat on its plinth in the shed for months. It would stare at me as I worked, and I back at it. Occasionally I would walk over and chisel a tiny flake off the naturally jagged surface. Late one night the form of the mask jumped out suddenly at me and I began work in earnest. About one third of the original rock has been removed.

The grout figure was inspired by a female butterfly swimmer and was originally designed to lie on the ground as if the surface were the surface of the water and the rest of the body were submerged beneath it. After a deep and meaningful drunken discussion regarding a fourth dimension I pondered if one could swim between dimensions, thus appearing segmented.
